Yamaha Motor Company Limited was founded in the year 1955 as a manufacturer of motorized products such as motorcycles, boats, snowmobiles, tractors, generators, personal watercrafts, 4-wheel ATVs, industrial robots and much more. Yamaha Motorcycles company is the second largest in the world. Yamaha YA-1 is the first bike manufactured by Yamaha, which inspired from the German DKW RT.

In India Escorts group had joined hands with the Japanese bike makers in 1985 and started manufacturing some 2-stroke bikes. After ceasing the Escorts operation in 2001, India Yamaha Motor Private Limited (IYM) was formed. They have their manufacturing facilities in Faridabad, Surjapur and Chennai. The IYM was incorporated in 2008. The history of IYM begins in Japan, from where Yamaha Motor Company Limited was born. Yamaha Motor Company is a Japanese motorized vehicle-producing company. Headquartering at Iwata, in Shizuoka, in Japan, the company was formed on July 1, 1955, under the leadership of the Yamaha CEO, Genichi Kawakami. In the same year itself Yamaha launched its very first motorcycle, the YA-1. It is a 125 cc, single-cylinder two-stroke engine bike. The YA-1 won its first race, the Mount Fuji Ascent Race. In 1970, Yamaha launched a 650 cc two-cylinder four-stroke engine motorcycle, the XS-1. And the very year caused to open another account in Brazil as Yamaha Motor do Brasil Ltda. (YMDB). In 1971, Haraban Motor Co. was founded in collaboration with Haraban Co. in Indonesia. The year 1972 was a great year for the Yamaha racing team. The team registered its first victory in both 250 cc class and 500 cc class at round 10, Swedish GP and round 11, Luxembourg GP respectively.

In 1973, Yamaha Motor Canada Limited (YMCA) was founded in Canada. In the same year, the company bagged all championship which took place in Japan. In 1983, Yamaha Motor Australia Pty. Ltd. (YMA) was incorporated, and an agreement was signed up with Escorts Ltd. for technical supports. Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America (YMMC) in U.S and Yamaha Motor Taiwan Co., Ltd (YMT) in Taiwan were established.

In 1990, Yamaha Motor Portugal S.A. (YMP) was founded. Followed by the company sealed its presence in France as Yamaha Motor France S.A. (YMF) founded and Mexico as Yamaha Motor de Mexico, S.A. de C.V. (YMMEX). Escorts Yamaha Motor Ltd. (EYML) established in India in a joint venture agreement between Escorts and YMC in 1995. In 1995, Yamaha received ISO14001 certification for their Yamaha Motor factory and office sites. Yamaha has a long tradition and heritage in the automobile industry since its foundation in 1955.
