Hero Honda Splendor, it was the other name for a commuter motorcycle in India. There won't be any Indian, who hasn't driven a Splendor yet. That's why it is the World's largest selling motorcycle model. Over these years, we had seen many avatars of Splendor, even after the formation of Hero MotoCorp. But things get little more interesting from the 2014 Auto Expo, when Hero MotoCorp launched the Splendor Pro Classic. It was a jaw-dropping scenario for every Indian to see their own Splendor n this new outlook.
Royal Enfield Continental GT
is the first Cafe Racer to be born in India, while this Splendor Pro Classic can be also called as 'poor mans cafe racer'. From the very first looks it is a retro-cafe racer motorcycle with the iconic clubman style handle-bar and single saddle.
With this product, Hero has made a serious note in the motorcycle industry that, one doesn't need any high capacity engine or higher price tags to make a bike cooler in looks and styling. Hero aims at rather simple and classic looking commuter in a low spec engine. The classic round headlamp, turn indicators and rear view mirrors are well placed and it does gives a cafe racer feels to the bike from the front. The 11-litre fuel tank bears old-school pin-stripe graphics which keeps the bike simple and enhances the retro looks.
Moreover, Hero retains the metallic mudguards along with spoke-wheels in this bike which was once used in 90's Hero Honda bikes. The large single seat looks more comfort and neater, with just one pair of foot pegs for the rider. Rear design of this bike looks like a cowl as sported by Cafe Racers with circular tail lights and turn indicators. It looks even better with thicker tires and more elegant looking exhaust. Hero Splendor Pro Classic is available in all Black or Solid Maroon paint jobs.
This Pro Classic features the famous 100cc engine, which is said to be the World's best selling engine which powers the Hero commuter range of bikes. This 97.2cc, 4-stroke, air-cooled, single cylinder engine delivers a maximum power of 8.36 PS @ 8000 rpm and a peak torque of 8.05 Nm @ 5000 rpm. Like all 100cc commuter, this one too is light, nimble and fairly decent at pick ups. The engine is mated with 4-speed constant mesh gear box for optimum power transmission to rear wheels. The bike is good at doing a regular city speed limits of 40 to 70 kmph but the vibration gets more and more messy while climbing higher speeds. Moreover, the Splendor Pro Classic stands firm on its looks rather than mechanical aspects, but it feels better in riding when compared to other Splendor models.
In order to enhance the Cafe Racer feel, Hero has deployed Sporty handle bars, which gives the iconic retro looks to the bike even from distance. The twin-pod instrument cluster comes laced with chrome rings which gives a premium looks to the whole console. It features speedometer on the left pod and the other one features fuel gauge with basic tell-tail lights like turn indicator, neutral, high-beam and even side-stand indicators. Other attractions of this bike comes from cafe racer styling single seat, classic chrome mud-guards, vintage style cafe cowls and rear classic round tail lamps.
Suspension, Chassis and Braking
Like all other Hero commuters, this one also features telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers at the front and swing arm with 5-step adjustable hydraulic shock absorbers are used at the rear.
The bike is built on the same tubular double cradle frame, but it is slightly shorter and lower than the basic Splendor PRO model.
The braking force relies on the 130mm and 110mm drum brakes at front and rear respectively. Disc brakes would have been better option in this model as it is a classic looking motorcycle.
As we mentioned earlier, it is poor man's cafe racer. It is not meant for long distance high speed touring on freeways rather it is meant for day-to-day commuting in city and even in rural areas. According to Indian standards single-seater concept doesn't works well as it is a budget motorcycle and people demands pillion seats. After all, this Hero Splendor Pro Classic targets a particular group of people who wants to ride a retro-classic looking motorcycle, who cannot afford the legendary Royal Enfields or even the mighty Triumph motorcycles. So, we can call it as the cheapest and most fuel-efficient so called Cafe-Racer in India.
