First Impression Review

Jupiter is the best selling model of the TVS Motorcycles. The new Jupiter Classic Edition is the latest offering from the brand to compete with the likes of Vespa market in the country. The TVS has employed a slew of cosmetic changes to the Jupiter ZX model to create a classic scooter.

The Design and Features
The new Jupiter Classic Edition is a completely updated Jupiter ZX. Apart from the engine, chassis and suspension, everything has been upgraded. The primary target of the TVS engineers was to develop a classic scooter in a low spec engine with maximum cost efficiency. At first sight, the newly tall windscreen steals away all the attention. The standard black rear view mirrors are replaced by elegant chromium round-shaped mirrors to enhance the classic look of the scooter from the front. Other novel features such as 'Sunlit Ivory' body colour, dual-tone seats with stitching, classy chrome back rest with a cushion and premium beige panels to complete the classy touch. There are also minor cosmetic changes in the front like new graphics with the 'Classic' moniker and chrome badging on top of the front fender to improve the aesthetic beauty.

TVS has also employed some advanced features in this Classic scooter. They had changed the shape and outlook of the instrument console with all new instrument dial with a large display and white background. Other features such as sleek chrome finish handle dampeners and the whole new classy silver oak coloured saddle comes in this classic edition package.

The Engine
Despite the fact that TVS has changed the aesthetics of the scooter to a whole new level, they had retained the mechanical features of the Jupiter ZX. The same 109.7cc, single cylinder, 4-stroke, air-cooled engine found in the ZX is used here. It comes mated to the automatic transmission to drive the rear wheels. it delivers the same power and torque figures of 8 bhp @ 7500 rpm and 8.4 Nm @ 7500 rpm.

The Chassis, Suspension and Braking
The scooter is constructed around a high rigidity underbone type frame, which is found almost in all other automatic scooters of the segment. The suspension system of the Classic Edition consists of advanced telescopic suspension up front and gas charged monoshock suspension at the rear. In the braking department, TVS has made a slight improvement in this scooter. It gets a larger 220 mm disc brake at the front and 130 mm drum brake at the rear with the assistance of combined braking system for smooth and risk-free braking.

Conclusion
TVS Jupiter Classic Edition can be called as the most affordable classic scooter currently available in the market. It will horn with the mighty Vespa SXL 125 and VXL 125. However, the Jupiter may be the most affordable classic scooter, but beating the Vespa market will be a tedious task for the Hosur based makers. Considering the build quality, engine refinement and the looks, it is considered as one of the iconic global scooters of all time.

To begin with kudos to team TVS, for designing this fine piece of engineering marvel, the TVS JUPITER CLASSIC (the upgraded version of the Jupiter zx variant).
There's nothing that I hate about this scooter, however, the front disk brake could have been optional & not compulsory. In fact, a disk brake is not required in such a low powered 110 cc machine. I can understand if the company provides it mandatory with a 150 cc mill(as given in the vespa150 scooters).
In fact I was under the impression & there were a lot of rumours doing the rounds of the internet & various automobile mags & garages that tvs would be very soon launching its 125 cc variant in the market around November. When is that expected ? Well, the fuel tank could have been larger around 8 litres. The headlamp bulb could have been of 12 volt 60 / 55 watts, h4, halogen bulb ( same as TVS has provided in the all new 110 cc TVs victor). Actually the round mirrors don't go well with the shape of the Jupiter. The earlier ones went well with the shape of the scooter. Brilliantly designed speedo console with a conspicuous white dial, howeve, TVS could have tied to include a trip meter as well(analogue). There is absolutely no need to give the AHO(auto / always headlamp on) feature, it's a sheer waste to have the headlamps on during the daytime. TVS should write to the transport ministry to revoke this law. As this merely adds to the existing global warming hazard. Just imagine all over the county crores of 2 wheelers ply throughout the day, if all have their headlamps switched on, just imagine the unwanted heat created by them in the atmosphere. The ground clearance could have been increased to 160 mm.

Thanks & regards,
Ross.
