What are the advantages and disadvantages of heavy crank

In older bullets have heavy crank and now the bullet is having lighter crank . The most of the person said that the older bullets like in 1970 to 1980, 90 are better than the new bullets like in2000 to 2012 .nd tell me whch is better ci engine or uci engine.

Royal Enfield increased the weight of cranks after feb 2009 and the cranks now weigh around 10kgs. So the bullets after 2009 and till date are of heavy cranks.

The advantages of using a heavy weight crank,
1. Frequency of changing gears is less
2. Can easily chug at less than 20 KMPH in 4th gear
3. Engine revolutions is less thereby throttling less and engine wear and tear reduces
4. Better torque from standstill(Awesome Pulling power can literally be felt on upward slopes)

The current Royal Enfield models with the new aluminum UCE engines have better reliability, more power, mileage and has less maintenance costs, but lacks the thump of old cast iron models. The old cast iron and AVL engines have more maintenance costs, less mileage and less power.

So go for the new Royal Enfield 350cc bike models having the same reliable 346 cc, Air-cooled, Single Cylinder, 4-stroke, Twinspark, Transistorised Coil ignition (TCi), Aluminum UCE engines with 19.8 bhp @ 5250 rpm of power and has 28 Nm @ 4000 rpm of torque with 5-speed gears and gives mileage of around 34 to 42 kmpl depending upon the riding style and conditions and has less maintenance costs and has good resale value.

Hi hari I am not satisfied with ur as far as I know that the bullet of 1970, 80 models having around 14 to 16 kg of weight nd I weighted it personally and also the weight of bullets 350 std of ci engine 2003 model crank is around 8 kgs but tell me that I am right or wrong .plz tell me right coz I am the owner of the bullet of std 350.

I agree that you are right. The Bullet bikes from 1970 to 80 models are having very heavy weight cranks with cast iron engines which were really good, but the bullet models from feb 2009 model with UCE aluminium engines till to the current new ones are having cranks which weigh around 10 kgs which have better reliability, more power, mileage and has less maintenance costs, but lacks the thump of old cast iron models.

you can replace the lighter crank by a heavier crank . new crank will cost heavy (about Rs.2500) , so you can get an old crank from scrap and can be fitted by a bullet mechanic.

A recent Electra model comes at a lower cost than even very old classic model.. Also i have heard that for Electra model, the engine has to be completely dismantled to even fiddle with gearbox. But it is not the same wid Classic.. What do u suggest.. Can i go for Electra????

hey Bros....Royal Enfield anounced the std 350 model as retired in 2009. From 2010 onwars it began to produce variety of bikes with an engine called UCE(Unit Construction Engine) where the engine and the gearbox are enclosed in a single casing. The main purpose of this engine is to reduce the leakage of oil and thereby provides good lubrication. Self start is enabled and the silencer bottle is so long with carbon deposition filters to fulfill the Euro Pllution Control norms. Also they implemented EFI(Electronic Fuel Injection) in which carb is absent. Thats all about the tech spec abt the bikes after 2010. The Thunderbird And the Machismo models use the Aluminiun engine: Appearence is categorised as Classic, Chrome, Std 350 Twinspark, Electra, Machismo And Thunderbird. All models come with the variance 350cc &500cc.

Vintage models like G2 and B1 came with heavier cranks(14kg&12:5kg) as it can handle heavy duty, smooth riding, even beats even above 40km/hr Speed. No necessity to shift geardown from top(4th) even below 20km/hr speed. The heavy crank bikes role freely without any hesitation even if the throttle is zero. Also perfect body balance. It takes time to mould yourself to drive a heavy crank bike perfectly. Simply its an art and truly its an amazing experience. It is possible to convert a light crank into a heavy crank. All that you wanna do is get a heavy crank from a trash shop then do some lathe works. Its important to change the bearing as the native one wont bear 12.5kg. Adding metal sheet to increase the weight of light crank mostly ends in failure. So don't go for that. Happy thumping Bros... :).

Hi ,
With a very humble manner i want to ask and will eagerly wait for your answer, that i have a 1977 model bullet and I want to know whether it's a G2 engine or B1 engine or neither of these .

As i came to know , re-introducing it to the British market in 1977 under the name 'Enfield' and This was a period of stagnation for the Bullet, as the Indian owners did not make even basic improvements to the motorcycle, and the quality of parts dropped .

So i want know whether my 1977 model bullet is of poor quality or
a good quality as like 1970 model .

I am waiting for your kind Response

I am pretty confused with all the information I am getting from many sources. I have set of questions which I am going to ask in a point wise and plz reply me in sequence.
1. Is it better to buy 82 -88 model or buy a new model standard bullet (350/500)?
2. If new model then is it better to buy 350 or 500?
3. Can old crank can b replaced with new one in new bullets?
4. I heard in new models if there is any repair in gear box then whole engine gets open up and it gets repaired. Is that good for engine life? And will that sustain as old bullets??
5. Can new model bullets sustain as old models ( with good maintainance )???
6. Coming to old bullets, if old bullet is in good condition and engine is perfectly fit then what will be the maintenance costs (approx.) And for how many kilometres it will go for servicing? As per showroom sources they say new models will go for servicing after 5000 kms..

Can u plz reply to me. I'd any more questions I will post you. Thank u so much.

Not holds equal weight balance to both side

Can't tilt bike while riding over 60 km pH to right side , with applying brake
Don't feel the heavy ground weight support

Dear friends,
It's all confusing. If you go for old purchase,go for heavy crank only & if you go for current models...no need to think, 'coz class of both series are different.
I have Bullet 350, 2001 model with heavy crank.Happy riding experience,well maintained,milage of 47 kmspl.
From last 5 years,I convert my machine from petrol to LPG,milage is 75 to 80 kms per 1 kg of LPG.There is not a problem in engine side but oil consumption becomes more, engine getting little more hot and sometimes starting problem.Overall experience for bullet biking is good.

Hi,i'd like to share my story...one of my uncle has a 14kg pre 1970 bullet..the machine runs like a dream..4th gear 45...dugg dugg dugg..now i have owned 3 diffetrent models of bullets trying to find the same riding dynamics.1st was a standard 350 1992(it was my elder brother's).2nd was a 525cc thunderbird..3rd was 2011 500cc stock self start...now compared to my uncle's heavy crank model...the 92 was a total piece of junk..the thunderbird was a model manufacturing defect used to backfire like a 12 gauge shotgun evry 3rd kick and shoot the carb out like a cannon.boughtthe dammed thing for77grand sold for 30g after an year.God help the poor knob who bought it,he must be walking with a limp.the recent 500 was better but is so light and "wannabe sportsbike" that it has no "dugg dugg" charm..begged the uncle to give me the bike...called dibs and waited for him to die...looked for a similar one..then went and bought a harley-davidson fatboy...it does what the heavy crank bullet used to..slow speed heavy thump..in between the heavy crank bullet "if you have ridden a well kep one" and the fatboy, there is nothing much that will satisfy the odd rider like me who loves to cruize..my first love will always be the old bullet..still waiting to get my hands on a good phoenix that will rise from the ashes when restored..easier said than done..very hard to find a good mechanic for that job nowdays....cheers

Heavy Crank Bullets were only till 1976 i.e from 69 you get B1 series printed.
This is the same G2 engine with slight difference of Bearings i.e roller to cage Bearings.
The crank weight is also 2 kgs down, else the feel is the same. Chugging at low speed is the specialty of heavy crank bullets.
You get the awesome ride experience in Heavy cranks model with the best Sound ever..
You cannot ride it like the new bikes now in town.
I have a 1973 B1 engine and a 2009 model bullet.
Both are awesome..

Advantages:

heavy Crank:
Very enjoyable to ride.
No Jerk
Climbing is more fun

Light Crank:
Little better pick Up
May be little better mileage about 1 to 1.5km/l due to less weight

You can fix the heavy crank to other std models. Provided you do sleeving and fix 2 pairs of needle bearings inside the crank case to hold the weight. Also reduce the front spocket tooth to the older version whern u had mostly 15 teeth front spocket. Its very fun to ride.

All the best.::

My bullet is 65 model and it's crank weight is 8.2kg. Is it original crank of g2 engine? What is the actual crank weight of 1965 model g2 engine?

Hey everyone G2 bullet crank weight used to be from 9.2 kg - 9.6 kg for different years and b1 engines till 1976 were G2 bullets stamped with b1 marking as they had left over parts in the UK so the also have same crank weight but from the 80's to late 90's they have reduced the crank weight to 6 or 7 kgs to make the bullet a bit more fun and accessible from 1999-2010 std bullet had 8-8.5 kg crank weight (best bullet engine after G2 ) and Electra bullet came with 6.5-7 kg crank weight ( with TCI ignition ) the electra's crank weight was reduced so the motor was able to rotate the crank shaft inorder to start start the bike .And from 2010 to present std bullets have he heaviest crank ever produced 10.5 kgs and other models with self start has a crank weight of 7.5 kg ( Enfield never produced cranks beyond 10.5 kg ) you can easily increase the crank weight with the help of a lathe worker but out of 100 cranks like that 75 of them tend to stop working after 8 -10 years so instead you buy a crank any local mechanic could have access to it . Company finish and reliability cannot be matched

Actually engine smoothness and chunking is not only based on crank weight but it depends the fitment ,bearings, carburetor tuning and CB point timing.in G2 engine crank weight is up to 9.6kg to 10kg, compression ratio is 7.5 :1,firing time is 0.8mm before tdc to be adjusted in CB point by retarding or advancing the CB point plate according to the feel of thumbing ,G2 engine manufactured with heavy crank, assembled and fine tuned by compony itself but nowadays people prefer to add crank weights according to their requirements it leads to grind crankcase and piston skirt for suiting if it's not done in correct way it leads to damage of bearings, and crank

I have a 83 bullet Crank weight was 6 kg + i bought a Crank 9.2 something and installed.. the thump is lovely heavy to hear..
As per my knowledge I did see Crank weight till 10kg+ ... Every one says 14kg and more i don't think that's true... but You can still buy heavy Crank from Enfield India for CI engine weight around 10kg.. cost is about 14k it's available

Dear RE Riders,
There are so many queries that its difficult to answer all. I have a 1970 model Bullet (Heavy Crank). Just giving broad inputs. First decide what you are looking for, mileage, or riding pleasure. If mileage, then go for light crank newer models. If riding pleasure, then go for heavy crank, upto 1980 or after 2009. Modifying your bike from light to heavy crank is NOT recommended. Changing the crank affects the balance and functioning of the entire engine and the transmission chain, ie, clutch and gear box. Heavy crank requires bigger engine bearings, so bearing housings have to be machined. Local lathe machines and operators are not as accurate as required, hence engine life and performance are impacted.
