Hi, definitely go for the the new Royal Enfield Std 350 at any cost. The new model has reliable 346cc, Single Cylinder, Air cooled, 4-stroke, Twinspark, Tci, aluminum UCE engine with 19.8 hp @ 5250 rpm of power and has 28 Nm @ 4000 rpm of torque with left side 5-speed gears. The bike gives mileage of around 34 to 40 kmpl depending upon the riding style and conditions and has good comfort in riding and handling and has good resale value.

Where as old Royal Enfield Std 350 had 346cc, Single Cylinder, Air cooled, 4-stroke, contact breaker, cast iron engine with 18 hp @ 5625 rpm and has 32 Nm @ 3000 rpm of torque with right side 4-speed gears and gives mileage of around 27 to 34 kmpl and had more maintenance costs.

The new Royal Enfield Std 350 is made of aluminum UCE engines, which has more power, mileage and has low maintenance costs, but lacks the thump of old cast iron Royal Enfield Std 350 models.

There are many differences between the old CI 350 and the new UCE 350 and it will take too much of typing to illustrate them. The old engine, when tuned properly, was much more smoother than the UCE but the UCE is much more reliable.

I have used Old bullet CI 1996 model.

Pros:-
1)After I started using this, my respect got increased in my area automatically.
2) When ride it everyone eyes falled into it
3) Sound will give you Good feeling when ride it.
4) I have altered with Classic spring, hence no back pain on it

Cons:-
1)Untill going fine, U will feel like a King, once it Start give prob then U will feel urself as cursed person.

2)I have faced below simple problems, but Lost my whole energy and Money on it:-

a) Accelator cable cut:- No where I found accelator cable for bullet in Nungambakkam, I caught auto and bought
cable from Royapet. Nearly 15kms distance. But Cable which I bought was duplicate. Approximately Mechanic put it.
Before Reached my destination 10kms distance, DUE to duplicate cable Bullet stopped for every 100mts once and need atleast
50kicks to start it, due to this my knee got started pain and my heart tooo. Note:- Cable rate is only Rs 40,
but auto charged Rs :- 200

b) at very first day my bullet got puctured at 6am in Egmore, no Valcanizer or Normal mechanic didnt help me, even nearly
I have begged them. I was waited in mechanic shop for 3hours, after then only mechanic sent his helper to help me.
For this I have spent to get mechanic , auto charge is Rs 300. Due to no mechanic willing to help, I have went
to all mechanic shop nearby Egmore.

c) Again one day my Bull got punctured in my home itself, By filled air in punctured Typre in nearby mechanic shop
and reached Valcanizing shop. For single puncture he asked me Rs:-60.

d) In Traffic, bull without self start really horrible thing to ride it.

e) Bullet will start within a single press some days and also it wont start even so many kicks most of a time.
It need to visit mechanic frequenctly for starting problem and also due to demand for Bullet mechanic, no
Bullet mechanic will respect you as a man. You need to stand or wait like a student in front of Headmasters.

f) If you ride it beyond 50kmph suddenly mileage will be 25kmpl or 20kmpl. you cannot
overtake any vehicles. If you follow speed 40kmph, you will get mileage 35kmpl. you can't expect pickup in it.

G) Front Drum Brake in Old Bull is totaly waste

Conclusions:- If you want to own Old Bullet, you Must need following:-
1) You should have more time to spend on it
2) You should keep money at all time, atleast 1000rs
3) you should check and change below immediately after you have bought it:-
TYRES,TUBES,CARBURATOR(if need) ,ACCELATOR CABLE(keep one spare),CLUTCH CABLE(keep one spare).

4) you should have nearby Bullet mechanic

5) If crossed 70KMPH it will vibrate more

New bullet is problem free,

1)YOU can change silencer to get Good sound equal to Old CI bullet. No
above problems will be in New UCE.

2) Front disk brake will give more braking power

3) Good Pickup

4) Good Mileage( 40kmpl to 50kmpl)

5) Self start will give more confident when ride in traffic.

Hi,
I'm owning a 1998 CI Bullet for the past one year. Got it rennovated completely and have no complaints regarding performance except some sort of noise from the tappets. I just got it serviced once (after completing 1000 Kms since rennovation). There is no starting problem with my bike, it usually starts in one or two kicks. But yes brakes lack the stopping power and could have been better.

Happy Thumping...!

Dear Friends,
I used Bullet 1959 model for 6 years(1997-2003)during my research assignment in a Project Tiger National Park in Madhya Pradesh. I was fortunate to be favored with very good times with such an old machine. Besides minor problems that I could fix myself I never experienced any big issue that can stuck me in deep forests. Average running was 3000 KM/month mostly in forest roads, the always kept me firm and safe during negotiating extremely rugged terrain. I used to calculate mileage on monthly basis and it was swinging between 32-38 KMPL. I do admit only complain that is oil leakage from engine and front shock absorbers. Now I am 43 and stay in urban so use lighter city bike HH CD Delux and Tata Nano car, but still remember the adventure days spent with an old Bullet. I don't know whether the UCE is better than CI, but can belive that RI is able enough to maintain the lineage of its royal machine.

When it comes to discussion on OLD CI Vs new UCE...its any time the CI...Bullet is for Men...and i mean Men...not Kids...the new ones are for kids...any tom dick and harry can start and ride it ...and this is the reason why you see so many REs on road these days...

With the OLD RE and its CI engine, Right side Gear Shift..Compressor to start the engine..there were very few who dared to buy a Bullet..

OLD Bullet is for Men and the new ones for kids ;-)

I used a 1996 model, recently sold that and bought a 2011 model standard. Only one scenario bullets are not at all reliable especially in night travels where you use headlamps that drains the battery charge. The biggest flow in an RE design is it can't start or ride with out a battery. Being an old technology bike it always surprised me. A small error in wiring will blow up the fuse. RE need to change it in the newer models atleast.

I'm using using bullet 350 standard (2001)
Recently a friend of mine bought the new bullet electra model (2014). Within 3 months he sold it because it felt him like riding a normal bike (real thump was missing) You guys have to admit it the new bullet ride is just like riding a year old pulsar.
I know here we have very proud owners of new bullet but i dont think they ever drove the old model.
If you seriously want to know which bullet is the best, ask an ace bullet mechanic.
Thanks

Answered by Yaswanth Reddy on 10-07-2015
comparing the two is as unfair...a cast iron engine is a trip back in time....nothing can replace the vintage charm....easy starting, good mileage, low maintenance ...any new bike will offer those....but very few will appreciate the utility of a pre-unit set up....old bullets are very easy to repair at the roadside, with very basic know how....same cant be said of a UCE bike...anyway,old bullets are not for people looking for a hassle free ride...though my bullets(1964 n 2009) have NEVER let me down...and i've been on some long rides myself...eg 1400kms..

Hi, i am a proud owner of 1973 beast, using it for more than 3 years for now, i have not got any major problems. Yes breaking are less but you can have the joy of riding in old ones, which i dint find it in new. On an average of 50 old bikes are the best.
Answered by Ashwin on 16-07-2015
OLD bullet is good but New model have its own benefits.
like self start, light weight, good mileage, less maintenance.
and Old have its design in chassis , heavy weight so good control in high speed. bike not slept when you apply breaks in high speed.also get neutral in any gear.uncommon gear system so no one is dare to touch your bike.
Answered by Vivek on 12-08-2015
new bullets are surely a better option. if there was no bharath stage 4 pollution norms and if the company havent designed the uce engine surely royal enfield would have stopped the production. bt with the new engine which is more reliable company is having more no of customers as compared 2009 or 10 when the engine was of old model. but still the thing that i couldnt understand was that why still people say older bullets are better. its a technology started in 1950. and is inneffienct in terms of power transmission as well as fuel efficeincy. thats that technology is something old or ancient.
Answered by Kikku on 21-09-2015
Old bulls can be restored any time either its 60 yrs old or40,new uce are garbage after 4-5 yrs , please show me the customer happy with new uce models today after use of 4-5 years of hard driving, but yes old ci are still in trend and for upcoming 10-15 yrs old ones will be thumping , and choice is yours what to buy, bullet is only ment by royal enfield for petroling for indian security forces in jungles and off road riding and after that villagers use them and then in city, new bulls are having crank problems , vibration problems, if you want to seee just go to royal enfield genuine workshop there you will see new bulls are having more complaint then old ones, puncture is not bad part of bulls, cable wire breaks if u use it , old bullet ko khi se bhi le aao kabad se bhi wo dhak dhak waise hi kregi but new one will be a piece of metals, old bulls were made for strong use by enfield india 1940, bike needs maintinanance any bike u burchase , thunder bird 350 spedometer brokes it will cost you around 8000 and for ci it will not break easily if stops working it will cost 300-400 only, i am lover of machine new machine are for higher torque and higher performance but u have to expence to maintaing any bike this is only the fact , 350 cc ki byk hai maintinace mange gi hi , agar ci me kisi ko problem ho starting ki to please ume 10000-12000 rs tak invest kr k usko electronic krwa lo pro kya isme maine krwa liya , meri height bhi kam hai, 250 cc k segment me india me koi bhi byk hai jiska maintinance bullet se kam hai, nahi bulls saste me repair ho jati hai aur ek footress pulsar 220 ka 200 ka hai bahar market me aur bull ka 40 rs isme kya pro hai. Dosto apki apni choice hai dono bulls apni jagah achi hai to chinta mat kro shauk badi cheez hai.

I read through the whole page and I understand that there is mixed views. Some praise CI and some UCE. The strongly feel 2 things and I am sure on it.
1. People with CI engines, they are happy with the performance and thump etc but yes they are not deviating from the fact that glitch are there which is quite obvious. No heavy engines are perfect. They tend to say that you will find what you are searching in bullet provided you end up in getting a good deal rather.
2. People with UCE or the newer bullets, all you guys are just compromising with what you have bought. Company want to make profit so they have moved from CI to UCE. In the past how many times did RE attempt to set a change in the market. The answer is hardly.Current generation who is shifting from a splendor or pulser or activa etc for them the UCE is good. The engine is just joke. You all will feel I am right if you thing from bottom or your heart. I am personally very happy with the look of the new bullet which is awesome. It is seamless but not the feel. Its like some coins in a bowl. One question to all y do you need to alter the silencer to imitate a sound where as CI do have to do it. This a the fact.
Cheers and happy thumping for CI guys and Happy kind of thumping for UCE guys :)

Am using 1986 350cc and getting mileage 32 to 36 in city.
It's not like normal bikes, to ride it we have to follow some below rules strictly to ignore starting problems.
1) when stop bullet before remove key from ignition we should make the point in centre to avoid battery drain and also avoid starting problem at next start.
If we follow this after a week also or winter/Rainy season Bull will start within single kick.
2) Need to close petrol to avoid starting problem

So many silencer can come but UCE cannot give CI thump.
CI is natural thump but all other artificial noise
Happy Thumping.
Answered by Jegan.d on 02-03-2016
I'm using 1986 350cc and rode UCE too, below are difference on my view:-
ABOUT CI:-
PROS :- 1) Spare parts price is very low compare to UCE eg:- Carburettor CI Rs:-1200 but UCE Rs 5500+
2) Thump like small thunder effect
3) except regular service No more maintenance if we have parts in good condition.
4) if ride below 60kmph then mileage 35kmpl+
5) No engine noise except thump sound.
CONS :-
1) It for FEEL not for speed. Above 60kmph itself engine would get more stress. Need to tolerate 100cc bikes which over taking you easily.
2) my office parking is underground 2 and never able to pull by bull in 2nd gear I able to use only 1st gear otherwise it getting stopped in middle.
3) if accelerate 60kmph + then oil leakage would happen
4) without Self start ride in traffic is horrible, if it stopped when riding alone then we can easily pull bike any side of road and give way to other vehicles if with family then?
Even though having many CONS still am loving it.

About UCE:-
PROS :-
1) Good pickup and speed equal to today's sports bike.
2) if maintain speed below 60kmph then mileage 43kmpl+
3) Self start & Disk brake give more confident on traffic
4) Replacing factory fitted silencer with outside one would get close to CI thump
CONS:- 1) more Engine noise would be compare to CI, It would due to more oil rotation for engine long life.

Conclusion:- Due to not able to and also people won't drive more than 60kmph except rare situation STILL CI DOING GOOD OTHERWISE COULDN'T FOR THIS MUCH LONG LIFE FOR IT
AND
If we maintain UCE speed also below 70kmph can achieve long engine life for it or any higher CC bikes.

So no more confusions about CI and UCE both would fine until hard riding but only difference is CI would suffer if we cross 60kmph itself but UCE won't till 80kmph or 90kmph.

Based on CI mechanic update, CI Bull can be restore any number of times but couldn't for UCE.
Better if we check about UCE engine restoration to Royal enfield show room mechanics to get true picture.

Above only general difference. Nothing more to confuse.

Bullets were firstly introduced for military during the world war era due to its easiness to remove parts and maintenance because of its push-rod technology and it was a reliable machine at that time. I am admitting the fact that a new engine technology is mostly always better (In 98% cases). So new generation engine is comparatively more powerful and fuel efficient. My first bullet was a CI 350 1988 model-7.5 kg Lightweight crank. Lot of oil leaking issues and tappet maintenance was required on it before years but the ride was smooth. Then RE launched the new UCE models and i was tempted to try one. So sold my 1988 CI and bought a 2012 UCE Electra. Maintenance was less compared to CI but it was completely lacking the real bullet feel. Not the thump but the riding comfort, In simple terms more vibration produced by the UCE and most importantly the lack of torque. You left knee starts paining after riding it for 100kms over a road with lot of potholes. New gen UCE requires frequent gear shifts than a CI model that we can use like an autogear on its 3rd gear.
Needless to say after after using it for 100000 kms I had to deal with the engine work for my Electra and it costed me a bomb. the I realized my 3 parts engine on a CI bullet was easier to dismantle and maintain but the UCE is very expensive to deal with and requires more time to repair it. I thought it might be a problem with my particular model Electra. So i sold it off and bought a Classic 2015 Classic 500-heavy crank.(10.5kg). Te story was nt much different in classic also. There was no feel at all, it was simply like riding a Karizma. Even a school kid with cycle balance can ride it. But the real old bullet it requires wisdom, strength and patience to start and ride.
I was disappointed instead of buying another bike I borrowed different bikes from my friends. Tested almost every Bullet model. UCE classic 350, UCE standard 350-heavy crank. 1998 CI and a 2007 standard CI heavy crank.
Here it is…..at last I found my match and it was the old gen 2007 model CI standard heavy crank. Less revv and Vibration free engine. Same old bullet feel. Less maintenance compared to very old models. More importantly the Engine repairs are quite easy and hustle free unlike UCE.

So here is my take after using RE bullets for all these years.
ADVANTAGES OF CI- Cheaper and easier for major works like Engine and gearbox maintenance due to its 3 parts design, Vibration free ride. More low end torque so less gear shifts are necessary. Neighbour kids will not t borrow your bike because they don’t know how to start and ride it. Can outlast couple of generations due to easiness in repairs and inter-changeability of parts. The legendary sweet thump (if that counts), Legendary world war Era design.

DISADVANTAGES OF CI- Requires frequent care even though the parts and labour is cheaper. Lack of immediate throttle response and performance like other sporty models. Amateurs can’t ride it ( For me it s a plus point anyway)

ADVANTAGES OF UCE- Requires less regular care, Good performance and economy. Easy to start and ride with self start, so less healthy people can use it.

DISADVANTAGES OF UCE- Very expensive for major repairs. High revving engine makes more vibration than CI models. Lack of torque accompanies with 5 speed gear is a real pain on roads in bad condition and roads with traffic, Engine design seems like a 200cc small one even though its 350cc. It is horrible to see lean under aged

It's my question to all bullet lovers nd enquiring about old bull vs new uce.
Let i tell you that i had owned old std 350 for a couple of years.my bullet mechanic was voracious of money so he had always worked on my bull carelessly.so maintainace was heavy for me bt i hv a little more knowledge how to maintain it.it took much tm from me.
Finally i sold it nd m planning to buy a new bullet.
I need some pieces of idea whether i should buy a new one or not from those who hv riding experiences of both the new one as well as new one.
I hv also a 1952 model bull in scrap condition.
With regards ur ideas i wl decide what i have to get

Hey buddies
I have seen new gen kids have written in their UCE that "Made Like A Gun". I always think that it can also be written in pulsar 220.whoever is confused about buying a bull have to think alot and I know everyone will be thinking. I own a 1989 ci and yes the maintenance are high and the real riders know it. do anyone think that the new classic 350 or 500 2017 can stay for the next 30 years 0r 20 years. definitely no.but the old ci does. every things have to be cared when its getting old. my advice to all riders who gonna buy a bull please go for the old one with heavy crank. you will be the king of roads and a respectful rider. I have seen people are giving me way when I ride my beast. Peace my brothers. safe drive.

I read all of your views on old and new bullet, From my experience I have something to share also, One of my friend brought bullet in year 2014, to this date he only changed silencer, from last 2 months his RE was giving problem, as staling sometimes, taking more than 10-15 kicks before starts again, he went to the agency they just serviced it and said now its problem free. By his bad luck before getting to his house engine stopped and didn’t start again. This time he went to local mechanic, and mechanic changed one electrical part under seat. After that it didn’t gave any problem............................boring story!!!

Come to the point.

My conclusion new bullets are best over old, as in this post many people are misguiding, I am not saying they don’t have good experience...
Repairing cost is not a major problem for one who is able to buy bullet. Problem is, you are spending so much money, is it worth to buy old? Why company upgrading its models?
Many people believes in the fact that old bullets gets repaired easily. If you calculate the time spent at mechanics workshop you will regret it.

New bullets also gets problem, people like to go to the agencies to resolve the problems, that is their mind set as company repairs to his best. But they are wrong.

In last 5-7 years new bullet sales booms in India, because of the modification in gear side. That makes more increase in quantity. From the birth of bullet it is not as much sold till 2009-2010 what numbers of bullets we had till then,, now it’s more than that after 2010- till now.

Some mechanics are repairing RE for over 30 years. Within no time they will give you ultimate of time and money you need to spend. Because they are very experiences. But in agencies 99% workers are in the group of 25-35 years so they are not much good at analyzing problems................ what I mean is, we do have problem with old and new bullets. But we should not criticize new over old.

If anyone considering my opinion, you should go for new bullet.
I also have booked a standard 350 bullet for myself. Feeling much proud to be an owner of RE on 25/03/2017

In my childhood whenever I used to recite that dug-dug sound I soon spank to the main gate for welcoming my father and his Royal Enfield CI Bullet 350 (1984). I Have a lots of sweet memories with this 33 years older Bike. I Have also heard so many adventurous incidents related to my father's bullet bike, one of my favourite, How my father escaped in between Rifleshot from the side of Racketeer when coming about on lorn routes. I m now 18 and will soon be having my driving licence in my hand but as here in my Borough we aren't having that much strict traffic police so that's why I have now completed almost 3 years of my riding experience with Royal Enfield Bullet 350 CI. when I started riding this bike, the thing I have realised is that to start CI engine is a kind of art which is required to learn to use this bike. In the early days of these past three years I soon get aware about 170-180 kgs of weight (including accessories), but its weight isn't a big issue and specially when we start to drive whereas the new one also weighs the same or May be slightly more. One of the fact behind each and every CI Bullet users is that they soon get a good friendship with the mechanics, thanks to those frequent meetings with these mechanics. But on the other hand, this bike also offers you so many modifications that you can do on it after expanding your pocket as much one could. It's having front telescopic shock absorbers which isn't that much effective like those in new bullet 350 whereas the rear suspensions works good but not as good as the new bullet's rear suspensions does. Though the old engine when tuned properly feels least vibrating when we ride it as compare to the new one. We cannot expect Bullet CI to accelerate as swiflty as the other bike does but it offers you sufficient acceleration which requires in overtaking, though the new UCE engine is having good acceleration and top speed around 110-120 km/hr, On the other hand if we talk about the top speed of CI then speaking honestly it will not go above 95 km/hr and starts to vibrate so much above 70 km/hr that could be feel on handle bar. Breaking in old Bullet CI is not the best among the two as we get front disc brakes in the new one whereas the older one has drum brakes which are not very effective but the rear brakes are sufficiently effective if installed properly. If we talk about dimensions then no doubt the new bullet is slightly bigger in length, width and Height. Fuel capacity is the same in both the models but you might struggle because of the petrol tank cap in CI Bullet, which sometimes let you feel riding this bike a bit troublesome, whereas such kind of problem you will not face if having the all new model of Royal Enfield Bullet. The older one offers u 18 bhp of power when tuned properly, whereas the new one having 19 bhp of power and also having more weight, So we actually get the similar power delievery from both the models. Oil leakage problem is a big issue in older model but not in the new one. Parking CI bullet outside in rainy season is a decision making task since you might struggle to start it again after the rain has gone and if unfortunately it stops in traffic then really you might have to struggle with those horn sounds coming from your back whereas the newer one has got electric start.
Bullet bike is itself a status symbol and often called as 'Raja-gaadi'. This bike will make people offer you ample of reverence whenever you will pass away on local streets.

Old is gold ,,,,, CI engines are real bullet
today's uce are pulsar for new generation,,,, who even don't know how to ride a bullet . I ve seen people riding classic as pulsar.
If you want real bullet go for old CI engines. Those people who afraid of maintenance they should ride plastic bikes or uce.

The brand is same but the heartbeat has changed, old or new it’s a Bullet(Raja Gaadi).
The LHS gears have made it easy to ride for people using other bikes though I feel RHS gears were also very easy to adjust to & gave a distinct feel.thump & vibrations have changed in uce,but lubrication system is far better & transmission losses are less.but what can a buyer do if the company gives us only 1 option I.e. UCE, the answer is people have to buy it so v don’t have any choice on hand, people refrain from buying used CI’s coz they r priced at similar prices like the new ones. CI or UCE it’s ur Bullet, just luv & ride it.
I luv riding mine ( Enfield Machismo 350 CI, 1999 )

Old bullet is great as compared to new one. Because everyone buying new bullet and old bullets are so less and old bullet has right side gears which make him so different than other bullets. Also old bullet has good sound as compared to new bullets. I also has old bullet 2006 model.
