Is India ready for the big daddy of bikes, Harley?

The big daddy of bikes, Harley Davidson has finally entered India. But are Indians physically fit and filthy rich to lay hands and own one? Is India ready for the bikes’ big daddy Harley?

In a couple of months from now, i.e., in June 2010 the roads in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Chandigarh will wear a new look. The Harley Davidson India has overwhelmed the Indian bike riding connoisseurs with launch of HD bikes in India with not just a couple of HD bike launches but a huge crop of 12 bikes. The company is working on its dealerships with Indian companies in the major cities and the bookings for the same would commence from April 2010 and they will be delivered per se (built in imported bikes from the US).

As of now, Royal Enfield Bullet Classic 500cc is the finest and the biggest bike in India, and the launch of 12 HD’s devils will make the big brother Royal Enfield Bullet look pretty much stunted and small in front of them; because the minimum sized bike will be from the Sporster family which displace an average of 883cc power which is almost double that of the Bullet Classic. The Dyna family of Harleys is much bigger, and the bikes and have a power displacement as high as 1600cc.

The 12 bikes, all from the global range of HD bikes of 34 are launched with hefty (read really huge) price tag; the least price being Rs. 695,000 and the highest being Rs. 3, 495,000. This could be the money one will be willing to pay for a C category four wheeler. So if you are filthy rich you can afford to own one and ride for some leisure pleasure (you know anyway that HDs are not meant for serious commuting). The average weight of these machines is about 419 kg which sounds really heavy.

So the 12 bikes (FLHR Road King, FLHTCUSE CVO Ultra Classic Electra Guide, FLSTC Heritage Softtail Classic, FLSTF Fat Boy, FXDC Dyna Super Glide Custom, VRSC™DX Night Rod Special, XL 883L Sportster, XL 883R Roadster, XL 1200N Nightster) that were launched at the recently concluded Auto Expo at New Delhi, comprise of 5 Harley Davidson’s popular range of bikes– The Dyna, Softail, Sportster, VRSC™ Nightrod and the Touring.

Dyna
Dyna family of HDs was born during the 60s, the non-conformist time period and customization was the order the day with stripping and ripping the parts and chopping off the frames changed the look of the bike. Dyna was that friendly HD bike range for that time. Being powerful yet enabling easy ride with low center of gravity Dyna runs on a powerful Twim Cam 96 engine and has a 6-speed transmission.

Softail
Looks plus technology is what comes as a package with this family of bikes. The beast like machines with lowed seat promises great ride even for the short people. Maybe the mounted engine and hidden rear shocks give it a hardtail look though. The Twin Cam 96B engine generates road pounding torque and with a 6-speed drive transmission the ride experience would be no less than awesome. The new 5th gear (helical cut) transmission promises very smooth delivery of the power.

Sportster
This is a race-inspired model and features classic looks. While the frame appears a little narrower than other models, the styling is definitely quite appealing as it is raw. The core of Sportster family bikes are made of cast aluminum and high-strength stamped steel. The bike runs on fuel injected innovative evolution engines with dual adjustable shocks (dual mode) and the bike comes with 5 preloaded settings. It also sports high-performance carbon fiber belts. The V-Twin performance engine offers no nonsense but awesome power as well as agility. The bike continues to evolve with time while firmly adhering to its roots.

VRSC Nightrod
The trademarked Nightrod family of HD bikes offer amazing blend of style and power. The engine technology of this family is inspired by the racing bikes. The V Rod, as they are popular is characterized by bold styling, being low profile and sleek lines. The Nightrod sports liquid-cooled Revolution engine. The race-inspired slip-per-clutch technology and Brembo Brake System gives the bike an unimaginable stopping strength.

Touring
Timeless styled, this family of bikes is for the true long ride lovers. Keeping that in mind, the bike is designed to render comfort kilometer after kilometer to the rider as well as the pillion. The large windshields with huge saddles offer comfort to both rider and the passenger. The V Twin Cam 96 engine with 6-speed cruise drive transmission with the helical cut 5th gear promise smooth power delivery.

The bikes in this family though evolved with time with new re-designed frames, stronger chassis and also the Brembo Brake System. So now take the road to nowhere and still enjoy your ride to the hilt on the HD Touring bikes. We will discuss at length about 12 bikes separately during the later time.

With all being said, please bear in mind that Harleys are certainly bigger and bolder and are only for the richer and the fitter type.

So, are Indians up for the Harley’s motley?

Mahindra2Wheelers showcase their concept vehicles at the New Delhi Auto Expo 2010

The recently ended 10th edition of International Auto Expo New Delhi was embraced by auto makers around the world, and Indian two-wheeler manufacturers left no stone unturned and have showcased their new product line up and high-tech products to the auto connoisseurs. The two-wheeler behemoths that took part at the Auto Expo and added gleam and glam at the 10th Auto Expo include: TVS Motors, Royal Enfield, Hero Honda, Bajaj Auto, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Harley Davidson, Mahindra 2 Wheelers, BSA Motors, Hero Electric, Ultra Motors, Yo Bykes, Vibgyor Vehicles, Emmel Vheelers, Tara International, etc.

This article we will discuss about the Mahindra coverage as regards the two wheeler segment. Their pavilion span across 2,000 sq. m. rocked at the 10th Auto Expo 2010, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

Mahindra has a distinction of being the only Indian automobile company to straddle the road transport ecosystem they showcased wide array of vehicles which included two wheelers, three wheelers, Sports Utility Vehicles, Utility vehicles, Light Commercial Vehicles and trucks. The products showcased echoed the company’s commitment to embrace future technology, innovative automotive solutions while respecting the environment.

Especially, 2009 has been that milestone year for Mahindra & Mahindra as it forayed into the highly competitive two-wheeler market.

The company already made a buzz in the market with new marketing strategies after acquiring the Kinetic Engg. And, should their commitment for addressing consumer interests is well received by Indian consumers, they will in sometime assume a significant place in the fast-growing Indian as well as the global two-wheeler segment.

Mahindra & Mahindra showcased some exciting products at the Auto Expo 2010. The Mahindra 2 Wheelers displayed 2-stroke 125cc concept scooter and a 4-stroke racing-concept 125 cc bike in addition to their selling domestic range of scooters the Mahindra Flyte, Mahindra Duro and the Mahindra Rodeo.

Mahindra concept bike

The Mahindra concept bike looked amazing to say the least and has a 125cc power mill which can generate a maximum power and torque of 53 bhp (you’ve read that right) and 32 Nm, respectively. The bike has electric start option and should the specs displayed be believed the bike can touch max speed of 245 kmph; well that means faster than the fastest.

The bike sports digital console and features Brembo brake system in the front and the rear (they are actually mono disc type). As regards the suspension the front is an inverted Paioli fork and the rear a monoshock Paioli fork. With a big fuel tank (13.5-liter capacity) the bike has a wide 1245mm wheel base. Definitely the bike is worth looking forward to.

As for the Mahindra 2 Wheelers concept scooter, it runs on a 2-stroke engine which has 124cc displacement. The engine churns power of 8 hp and generates 9 Nm of peak torque. The scooter is claimed to touch 120kmph of maximum speed. Both the front and the rear are fitted with mono disc type brakes. The scooter has a 7-liter petrol tank and it has auto start and kick start options with automatic transmission drive in its kitty.

The scooter as such looks like a radically styled one and a little offbeat too, but should Mahindra2Wheelers start production of their concept machines, they should well drive away Pulsars and Apaches off the Indian roads; so handsful of work for the new kid in the 2-wheeler market

Vibgyor Bikes

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Vibgyor Vehicles, the West Bengal based two-wheeler maker forayed into the bike segment with unveiling of two new bikes at the recently concluded Auto Expo 2010 at New Delhi.

Vibgyor Vehicles stall indeed stunned the bike enthusiasts with their launches; one in the 125cc segment and one in the 150cc segment; Hunter 125cc and Shark 150cc bikes. The two vehicles were unveiled by none other than Kolkata’s numero uno celebrity Saurav Ganguly. It also sports a digital speedometer and gear indicators, at par with the latest trends. The Hunter 125cc exudes a class of its own in the 2 colors it is currently available; red and black.

Shark 150cc appears to have gotten more attention in the design aspect and it sports Apache-like (I hope I am not sounding mean) aerodynamic design and appeals younger bike riders. The 150cc bike exudes high-spirited character, and it runs on a 142.6cc engine and generates a power of 13.05PS at maximum rpm of 9500, and delivers 9.6 Nm torque at 7,500 rpm should pound the hearts of speed-crazy Indian youth.

The aluminum silencer and stainless steel fasteners give the bike an enhanced youthful look, besides actually grabbing second glance from the onlookers. The dual-toned Shark is it’s another catchy feature. It comes in red and black and yellow and black color options. And, for a price under 50,000 this should beat rest of the bikes in the class. Vibgyor Allied Industries’ R&D team takes the credit of developing the Shark bike. Both Hunter and Shark bikes come with the option of disc brakes in the front and an electronic self starter.

Vibgyor Vehicles intends to launch a 100cc Persona utility scooter as well as a 200 cc bike during the second quarter of the current financial year.

Vibgyor Vehicles is a diversified group under the umbrella of Vibgyor group of companies and has its headquarters in Kolkata. Highlights of TVS Motors products at the New Delhi Auto Expo Show 2010

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

TVS Motors one of India’s leading two-wheeler companies introduced its new hybrid vehicles in the Auto Expo at New Delhi. It was eight hybrid two wheelers and five auto rickshaws from the TVS group. The display of vehicles from the TVS Motors was clearly evident of the companies’ serious efforts to provide technologies that are braced with cleaner, environment-friendly and highly efficient vehicles.

TVS’ product introduction also suggests that it is the company’s strong step towards promoting green technologies to achieve considerable reduction in the CO2 levels.

TVS Motors is also the company that has the credit of being the first automobile maker to have commercially produced the electric vehicles. The fundamental principle of these hybrid vehicles is to reduce emissions and improve the fuel efficiency.

Hybrid-TVS King
The Hybrid-TVS King is one of a kind in the 3-wheeler category; it is a plug-in 3 CNG vehicle and the unique feature of his 3-wheeler is the axial flux motor, which is connected with engine to enable power guidance while accelerating the vehicle. This technology helps the CNG engine and also lowers the emission levels to a great extent. The Hybrid King is supposed to bring down the CO2 emission level by 22% and the HC+NOX will be reduced by 20%. The power drive is supported with a smart micro controller, which serves in recuperating the energy that is generated while accelerating and braking with the process of regenerative charging. The micro controller is a powerful mechanism that also controls the energy produced by the battery & CNG so as to manage the CO2 emission efficiently. The micro controller serves as a battery SOC monitor and also preserves energy by deactivating the power points.

TVS Streak Hybrid
The Streak Hybrid in the two-wheeler category basically draws power from two sources- the 4-stroke engine and an electric motor and that means the vehicle will be available in electric as well as engine mode. The power sources will function at the choice of the rider and it will be operated based on the mode selected: Electric option alone (for those quickie trips and no fuel consumption); just the engine mode (when the battery charge is run out and/or low); hybrid electric option (using engine and battery) and the hybrid power mode (to generate good acceleration).

The other advantage in the TVS Streak Hybrid is the smart use of energy; the mechanism is devised in such a way that when the brakes are applied the battery gets charged and the power is utilized only if there is a requirement. The energy is conserved while the vehicle is static, especially when you halt in the traffic. The vehicle is user friendly too; if you choose to ride the vehicle over a short distance or for zero-fuel consumption then you can simply select the electric mode. If the battery SOC is considerably low then go for engine mode. In the hybrid electric mode the two power sources function in accordance to the programmed strategy and both the engine and electric sources work in tandem if you choose the hybrid engine mode that enables better acceleration.

TVS QUBE 2.0
The TVS 2.0 scooter will sure be a tough competitor in the days to come rather once it is officially launched. The same engine that is found in TVS Pep+ powers the QUBE 2.0 but this one comes with an electric motor and it is supposed to be on the similar lines of the award-winning concept-QUBE. The rumours doing the rounds regarding this new scooter is that it will be launched sometime in 2010. The look of the scooter is certainly a fresh breeze and is also very compact. And yes the scooter emphasizes on the green technology and represents the company’s move to produce eco-friendly vehicles. The technology employed for this vehicle ensures 30% reduction of CO2 emission, which in turn increases 30% fuel economy.

Other TVS vehicles showcased in the Auto Expo
TVS Motors also showcased their recently rolled out two-wheelers that included the auto-clutch bike TVS Jive, TVS WEGO, TVS Apache RTR 180, TVS Flame DS, TVS Scooty Streak and also the Apache RTR 180 with ABS technology were displayed. The other attractions of the Expo from TVS Motors were RTR 250 FX and TVS Hammerhead (an ATV quad bike), which were true representations of the company’s engineering expertise.

The green technologies adopted by TVS’ hybrid electric vehicles promise reduced emissions to the extent of 30% reduction in CO2 emissions as well as improved fuel economy.

The Chennai-based auto maker seems to be working hard to adopt the greener technologies to the maximum extent possible to benefit the mankind in the long run while not deviating off from the bike riders’ interests. No wonder the TVS stall at the recently concluded New Delhi Auto Expo received huge visitors and was a big hit.

Hamara Bajaj scooter attains superannuation

Our dads’ old and faithful warhorse Hamara Bajaj scooter attains superannuation

Majority of the generations who grew in the 70s through 80s have had Bajaj in their growing, whether childhood or teenage; their fathers must have definitely rode this scooter for many years. Decades back, people who looked for prospective grooms spoke very high of a person who had a Bajaj scooter. A Bajaj scooter was once upon a time regarded as a symbol of status and statement of a decent earning man. However, all that was a long time back story.

The company’s first scooter model, Chetak(intentionally it was given the name of Maratha ruler Chatrapathi Shivaji’s horse’s name), was launched in 1972. Chetak remained Bajaj’s flagship brand for over 10 years. There was a time when people had to wait hell lot of a time after pre booking their Chetak. A black market thrived selling the Chetak scooters. And, late 70s had been the Golden period for the Bajaj scooters, especially the Chetak. In 1977 Bajaj Auto claimed to have sold a lakh of Chetaks in just one financial year. There were times when people voted for Chetak rather than waiting long for Premier Padmini and Ambassador Cars. Post Hamara Bajaj campaign, the company touched one million mark by the end of 1995.

Chetak also claimed amazing resale value. However, the sale of Chetak’s started to dip in the early 90s and Chetak could never recover at all. First the Kinetic scooter kick butted the Bajaj scooter, and then came the bikes one after the other including Bajaj’s and sent these scooters to garage as worthless piece junk.

It was indeed Bajaj that gave birth to the scooter market in India and popularizing it under the heart-touching and sentimental ‘Hamara Bajaj’ campaign. Bajaj was founded in 1945 as first Bachraj Trading Corporation Pvt. Ltd. Having sold scooters for over 5 decades, Bajaj announced that it will phase out the scooter production and have its focus set high on bikes market. Bajaj couldn’t stop rolling out its bike models to save its scooter. The company believes there is no sense in making scooters which fail to appeal this generation. Scooters are hardly selling these days, and the second hand market too is almost dead for the same.

The company believes it’s a sacrifice they are doing by fading scooters to aim at becoming bike specialist in India. The same was announced by Managing Director of Bajaj Auto, Rajiv Bajaj at the launch of Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS bike.

Bajaj now sells a 100cc scooter (gearless one) Bajaj Crystal and it sells very little amidst competition from other gearless scooters including Activas, Access’ and the Kinetics. So, what had been a part of our childhood will now become a history and a passé.

Honda CB Twister unveiled

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

The much hyped 110cc bike from Honda India stable is unveiled. The company says that they expect to launch the new 110cc bike at the next year’s Auto Expo.

It’s expected that the new 110cc commuter bike will be named as Honda CB Twister. The pictures of Honda CB Twister have been surfaced online and creating hype for the new bike; thanks for unveiling the bike before its launch.

Check the pictures of the Honda CB Twister and you will know what Honda has made in the 110cc bike; sporty looks and aggressive styling. The auto designers at Honda must have taken inspiration from Honda’s super bikes to design the CB Twister; it looks like.

The fuel tank and the red-colored shock absorbers of the Honda CB Twister take after the CBF Stunner.

The headlight seems to have gotten more aggressive designing and it complements the stylized air scoops.

The CB Twister doesn’t like competing with Splendor or the Passion Plus, but is indeed a niche bike in the 100cc bike segment.

There are many uniques as regards the Honda CB Twister. The 6-spoked mag alloy wheels, colored shock absorbers, disc brakes in the front, stylish exhaust design, split grab rails and open chain. Besides, the paint finish looks amazing and gives CB Twister a more-bike-per-bike look. These unique features will hopefully put Honda CB Twister as an amazing machine in segment.

Twister 110cc is expected to be priced Rs. 55,000; ex-showroom Mumbai; but it might vary.
