Yamaha electric bikes?

Japanese two wheeler making giant Yamaha is mulling with the idea of bringing electric bike soon as an alternative to the petrol run bikes amidst spiraling petrol costs and frequent petrol price revisions (read: increases).

Yamaha's wholly-owned subsidiary in India the India Yamaha Motor, is with the idea of making a bike specifically suited to Indian roads soon. The company already announced it will come with two new bike launches in 2011.

Jun Nakata the India Yamaha Motor Director (Sales & Marketing) was quoted saying to PTI "For rising fuel prices, electric bike is a good option. Currently we are selling electric bikes in Japan and Europe. There is a possibility for the Indian market for introducing these products."

The bike maker was no where in comparison to Hero Honda or Bajaj some years back but Yamaha FZ 16 and the Yamaha R15 have changed the face of India Yamaha Motor and the auto major enjoys a decent space in the market, not to mention the increasing fan following.

Across the globe, Yamaha is known for super bikes and concept of electric scooter. No wonder the bike maker is contemplating with heavy investments in India with the electric bike idea- in a way it's admitting the strength and potential the Indian bike market has.

Need I have to say more other than keeping my eyes wide open and look forward to the electric bike revolution from the Yamaha? The bikes are need of the hour to keep the rising pollution levels at bay and seem good answer to petrol price rises.
