TVS Velocity 160

Is this the bike to beat the hell out of Yamaha FZ 16 and Hero Honda Xtreme?
It was during the 18th Indonesia International Auto Show that the TVS Velocity 160 Street Fighter concept bike was first exhibited. The killer looks of the concept instantly got huge Indonesian fan following. Although TVS has a notorious reputation of bringing concept to product, one may not have to write off about the Velocity 160 so early. It is one buzz word in the Indian bike industry and considering the bloating market and demand for good competition in the 150cc segment, the company might well translate the concept to the tangible Velocity 160cc street fighter bike.

Design and appearance
The TVS Velocity looks that it has taken design cues from Apache or shall we say it is modified Apache RTR 160? It does takes after the blockbuster Yamaha FZ16 too. Looks wise the TVS Velocity 160 appeals with body colored muscular frame (nonetheless plastic) which does make it look sorts of classy.

Stuffed with attractive halogen headlamps, chrome-finished front cowl that is non-faired with neat body graphics and upside down forks in the front, broader tyres (both front and rear) and alloy wheels all seem to be very candy to the eyes. Talk about advanced features the Velocity 160 concept comes with digital console that has a speedometer, a trip meter, an analog tachometer and a digital fuel gauge.

The dynamic body with sharp and short tail lamps and monoshock suspension at the rear are all hallmarks of this elegant street fighter concept.

The TVS Velocity 160 has black chrome finish long silencer that has oodles of style yet giving it sporty looks. The saddle is not straight yet it is designed to comfortably seat rider and pillion. The rigid chassis muscular body allows it to stand in competition for becoming popular bike alongside the Yamaha Fazer, Hero Honda Hunk, Hero Honda Stunner, Hero Honda Xtreme, should it be launched in India without much deviation from the concept.

Engine and power
The TVS Velocity 160 comes with a 4-stroke, single cylinder, air-cooled 159.7cc power mill that can generate maximum power of 15.2 Bhp @ 8500 rpm and delivering peak torque of 13.1 Nm @ 6000 rpm. Besides generating eloquent power and beating torque the engine should deliver good pick up and acceleration. Furthermore, the TVS Velocity has advance engine features (the fuel injection technology is to name but one) are believed to help the bike deliver decent fuel efficiency of 60 kmpl. According to reports the TVS Velocity comes with self and kick-start options.

Brakes and suspension
Besides efficient powertrain, the TVS Velocity comes with solid suspension system to deliver not only power packed performance but also riding comfort.

The front suspension comprises of upside down forks (Mito) is believed to be stronger than conventional ones. At the rear it is YSS monoshock suspension. The suspension system on the whole is believed to have maximum shock absorption ability while rendering enhanced stability to the rider. The stability is enhanced though by broader tyres (black magnesium alloy wheels) at the front and the rear (an inch wider rear wheel). The bike comes fitted with disc brakes (Kitaco) in the front and the rear.

The aerodynamic body with eye catchy graphics, black mag alloy wheels with fat tyres, curvy seat saddle and rigid suspensions with disc brakes at both ends is believed to give optimum comfort for the rider and helps the rider to have good control of the bike under any ride conditions.

TVS Velocity 160 is a rider friendly dimension concept and with digital instrument panel with comfortable seat, new halogen headlamp, appropriately positioned foot peg will be its USP if the concept is produced.

TVS Velocity 160 might come in colors including Midnight Black and Sunset Yellow body that perhaps will add to the glamour quotient of the bike. The bike is expected to come with a price tag as same as Yamaha FZ 16, and there are rumors that the TVS Velocity will be launched in the mid 2011 here in India, although the company is tightlipped about the Velocity 160 concept here.

TVS guys must have been gauged the pulse of bike enthusiasts from the response they got to the Velocity 160 concept and if rumors are to be believed the concept may be tweaked for better. Poor mileage has been the reason for poor sales of Yamaha FZ 16, and should the TVS Velocity 160 lives to fuel efficiency expectations of 60 kmpl the alluring street fighter bike not only inflate the TVS' sales but also can shake up the 150cc bike segment yet again.
