New 100cc TVS Star Sport with CVTi technology
TVS Motor Company will launch a new Star Sport motorcycle in early January, fitted with the CVTi technology. The 100cc model will carry a price tag of Rs 33,000 (ex-showroom, Mumbai).
Company officials told that the bike, fitted with 17" wheels, will deliver greater power and mileage than the present Star Sport, which was launched earlier this year. TVS is also betting big on CVTi technology, which is also a part of the recently introduced 110cc Star.
Its competitive pricing will see the new Star Sport take on the Bajaj Platina and the CD Dawn from Hero Honda. These bikes are part of the entry segment where over 1.5 lakh units are sold each month, though margins are not terribly attractive. This is also why most two-wheeler makers cross-subsidise these products with more powerful and profitable motorcycles.
It is in this context that TVS Motor's 125cc Flame will play a big role. It will be in a product category (the executive/ value segment) where Hero Honda rules the roost with the Splendor and Passion.
The new three-wheeler will also be out in early 2008 and will be an important growth driver from the viewpoint of profitability.
The Star City has been the proverbial good luck charm for TVS Motor in the entry segment. It has, within a relatively short time span, made a mark for itself and accounts for sales of over 40,000 units each month. The company is therefore focusing on the range (the 110cc Star City and now the new Star Sport) in terms of adding new features so that volumes grow.
In a sense, TVS Motor missed the bus with the 100cc Centra some years ago. It had everything going for it, from mileage to technology, save for the pricing closer to Rs 40,000. The Centra lost out rather unfortunately, but it was a vital lesson for the company, which has since focused on keeping costs in check and, subsequently, the final price tag.
