I have an old 1975 350 classic bullet, but the front brakes fail to st

I have an old 1975 350 classic bullet, but the front brakes fail to stop the bike and are usually of no use, this bike has a single drum break assembly but my mechanic says a comparatively bigger drum would do the work. So is this true? Thank you.
